Background Information

Drug Abuse/Addiction in Mexico is horrible. Many teens and adults do drugs, from marijuana to cocaine to heroin.
After 9/11, Border Security increased, so drug dealers couldn’t sell drugs in the USA. They were forced to sell their drugs to Mexicans so more and more people in Mexico use drugs.
Like any addiction, many, many people are using drugs. Teens especially use drugs when they are feeling insecure and want to be “cool”. The addiction lasts a lifetime. The United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (UNODC) said, in 2002 that “Children are especially vulnerable to trying and accepting drug use for a variety of social and economic reasons.” The kids and teens who use drugs are curious about drugs, and they have peer pressure, low self esteem, identity struggles, among other things. Many kids begin to take drugs to cope with neglect, violence, sexual abuse and poverty. Among city-kids, many use drugs to stay awake for school and work, to numb the pain of street life and to function for their daily lives.
In poor places, where jobs are hard to come by, people make quick and easy money by selling drugs. As the use of drugs become more and more widespread around Mexico and the world, drug dealers make more money.
